...is a third-generation Illinois attorney. He completed his undergraduate work at Georgetown University and the University of Fribourg, Switzerland (receiving his A.B. from Georgetown University in 1969), and graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University Law School (Chicago) in 1972.
He joined the Chicago law firm of Schiff Hardin & Waite in 1972, becoming a partner in its Estate Planning / Administration Department in 1978. In 1985 he joined the firm of Pokorny & Associates, Limited, in Oak Brook, Illinois, where he concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning and administration.
He is a fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (serving on ACTEC’s Practice, Professional Standards and Technology in the Practice committees), a member of the Chicago Estate Planning Council, of the DuPage County Estate Planning Council, and of the American Bar, Illinois Bar, and Chicago Bar Associations. He has taught Federal Estate & Gift Taxation, and Advanced Estate Planning Seminars, at De Paul University School of Law and Loyola University School of Law, both in Chicago. He served as the primary editor of the first edition of the American Bankers’ Association Deskbook on Trust Administration.
He is the co-author / author of: “Duties and Responsibilities of the Trustee”, a chapter in Trust Administration in Illinois, published in 1976 by the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and continuously updated through 2005; and “Professional Responsibility And Malpractice Issues Confronting Estate Planners”, a chapter in Illinois Estate Planning: The Basics and Beyond, published in its updated form in 2005 by IICLE in 2005.
He has participated as an author and speaker for IICLE’s: Estate Planning Short Course, Real Estate Short Course, Trust Administration: Essential Duties for Trustees and Their Advisors, Sophisticated Estate Planning for Uncertain Times,Basic Estate Planning: Introductory Drafting and Tax Issues; and Advanced Asset Protection Planning: Ethics and Fraudulent Transactions.
He has also participated as a member of IICLE’s technical advisory committee for continuing legal education through Internet access.
He serves as a board member and a member of the planned giving committees of a number of charities, acts as special counsel to the trust departments of a number of local banks and trust companies, and to the Illinois State Bar Association Mutual Insurance Company in connection with estate planning or administration malpractice claims filed against its attorney members.
A frequent speaker at IICLE seminars, Mr. Pokorny also presents continuing legal education seminars for attorneys, financial planning firms, and for the trust and legal departments of banks and trust companies.
